A poet and a historian who could read the Ancient Musnad Script which was used in the era of the Ḥimyari Kingdom.
Mutahir Bin Ali Al-Eryani is a poet, author, and historian who was born in 1933 in the fort “Riman” in the “Al Qafr” division, Ibb governorate. He was first educated by some of the educated elders “Sheikh” in his family. Later, he received his education from his older brother Fadl Al-Iryani, may Allah have mercy on him.
Al-Iryani began his career in poetry at an early age. He wrote his first poem at the age of fourteen and it was published in the “Al-Nasir” newspaper in Taiz,1951. He wrote many contemporary literary poems, and many of his poems were transformed into songs, such as “Love and Coffee” (Al-Bala), (Dangerous Ghosn Al-Qana). These songs were sung by famous Yemeni singers, for example, Ali Abdullah Al-Suma and Ali Bin Ali Al-Ansi.
Al-Iryani read and mastered the Ancient South Arabian script (Musnad) in his teens and he is considered to be one of the few people of his time who managed to understand and decipher these ancient scripts. His literary and historical works were an important contribution to the Yemeni heritage. An example of that is “Shams al-Ulum”, which is considered to be one of the most distinguished books of ancient Yemeni history.
Al-Iryani died on February 9, 2016, at the age of 84 years, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him.
