Badawi Zubair

He started out as a postman delivering letters which were filled with joy, sorrow, love or blame. He realized then that he too held a message in his heart that was yet to be written by melody and not words!

Ahmed Yaslam Khamees Zubair known as “Badawi”. Born in 1950, in the District of Shibam, Hadramout Governorate. His songs were the essence of each and every Hadhrami wedding ceremony. Badawi was a breath of fresh air after the death of the artist Muhammed Jummah Khan whom he took as a mentor to walk in his footsteps but not for too long till he shaped his own style. Away from music, he was interested in carpentry mainly in the making of Oud instrument as well as Poetry which was not written but listened to by many of his relatives.

Badawi’s art was not exclusive to Hadhramout, he magnificently excelled at playing tunes of Sana’a and Aden as well which held a great impact on the many hearts of the Yemeni audience. In addition to that, he participated in many local festivals that further contributed to his popularity across Yemen and nationwide.

This was our art, and these were our artists

We brought you everywhere in yemen..yemen AlEman, we go riding the knights ..the field knights” the literal translation of the ‘Forsan Almaydan’ tv show theme song that always kept us waiting every night in Ramadan!
The show first aired on the local official channel in 1994, which was constructed of different segments. In the first segment, he would ask various cultural questions to people he’d encounter on the street. Then he would take us on a field tour in one of the famous areas in Yemen and sometimes he would present us with a simple spiritual segment. Yahya then would conclude the program by hosting some of the folk games competitions where the winner wins a prize.
Yahya’s name is still associated with Ramadan even after he’s gone for the impact he left in people’s lives throughout his life and career.
Today marks the 9th year anniversary of the journalist Yahya Allaw death after a long struggle with illness on 14th June 2010, May god rest his soul.. Yemen used to be..not much of a difference.
